Many leaders don’t know of Henrietta Mears, but they definitely know of some of the people she impacted. Henrietta was a teacher from Minneapolis, who in her 40’s became the director of Christian Education at Hollywood Presbyterian Church. It was there that she has a significant impact on Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, Dawson Trotman, founder of the Navigators, Billy Graham, Ronald Reagan who was a Hollywood movie star at that time and others, as she taught them the Scriptures. Her Sunday school program was developing as many as 6,500 young people each week.
Here is Part Two of some powerful quotes from her leadership:
Every church should produce its own leadership – something is wrong if we are not. There are plenty in the church. They need to be enlisted and trained.
Humility is a matter of getting things straight. It is putting God first.
The purposes of God are sometimes delayed; but never abandoned.
Preliminary preparation to teaching must include a house cleaning in personal behavior.
If your eyes are to see clearly, your heart must be pure.
Make Christ magnificent in the eyes of man.
The Sunday School is the best training ground the church has.
Leaders are trained – not born.
Divide work up into “bite size.”
Not your responsibility, but your response to God’s ability that counts.
Our supreme task as Christian educators is to gear students into Christian service, regardless of what their specific occupation might be.
A leader has inward strength which sustains him through every conflict.
