Today I want to talk to you about the top ministry interview questions and how to answer them. You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so you want to answer these questions really well. If you have poor interview skills, you aren’t likely to make it to the next round of interviews despite that glowing résumé and references. They’ll never even be called. So here are a few questions for you to make sure that you are prepared to answer. Let’s take a look.
The first question is: “What do you know about our church?” When they ask that, they really want to know if you will be a good emissary for their church and if you will represent them well. And this is a unique opportunity for you to set yourself apart from the other candidates. Most everyone is going to read the “About Us” page and regurgitate the mission statement. What you need to do is set yourself apart by showing how your passions align with that vision statement.
Next: “Why are you interested in this role?” Churches want to hire people who are passionate about the role, as well as their church. You should have a great answer prepared for why you want it – what about this role, what about this church makes you interested and why do you want to be a part of it? If you aren’t passionate about this position, then do everyone a favor and look elsewhere.
The next question is: “How do you handle conflict?” This is one that is becoming increasingly popular. Sure, you seem like a nice guy, but what happens when you clash with the keepers of the status quo at your church who don’t want the changes you are bringing? Bring up a specific example and the action that you took in the past to bring about resolution to conflict. It also may be helpful to have a similar example of a way in which you brought a healthy compromise and not just a simple resolution.
