The field of church communication is always growing and developing. There will always be a new platform, technique, or way to utilize a platform that keeps you on your toes.
However, there are certain skills that remain timeless and consistent throughout all of the changes involved in this field.
Here are four skills of successful church communicators.
- Be able to manage the micro and the macro. In order to succeed in the field of communications, you need to have a keen eye for detail. Don’t be afraid to be particular and consistent. But also maintain a clear view of the mission and vision of your church and be able to see how your area of communication can work to further promote that mission.
- Be flexible in the moment. Things are bound to change and therefore, you must be willing and flexible to adapt as you go. Being flexible isn’t always easy. Sometimes it will require quick, on-the-go thinking. Sometimes it will require staying up late in order to make changes. However, in the long-run, being adaptable is one of the most important character traits for communicators.
- Understand the basic craft of story. In church communication, you are a storyteller. You need to have an understanding of what makes a good story and who you need to involve to make your story engaging and inspiring.
- Be comfortable with incongruence. As a church communicator, you act as the air-traffic controller. You are going to see everything that comes in and out of the church. It is important to realize that you cannot fix everything. Sometimes you simply need to embrace the incongruence.
