Today, I want to talk to you about your leadership style. So, let’s take a look at leadership development as poetry and plumbing. The poetry portion, we all know well. We are good at this in the church. It is about preaching and inspiring people to use their gifts in service to Christ. But sometimes we fail to deliver on the dream with the systems and processes to actually get things done. So, let’s take a look at this framework and decide what kind of leader are you.
Are you all poetry? Are you all preaching, all leadership development, all about convicting the heart–every member and ministry? But not having plumbing. Not having clear processes and systems for people to run on. If you are, you are in the dreamer category.
Or are you a doer? Do you have the systems and processes down, but the people are for your process? And your systems are so good and so clean that you are obsessed with just getting it done and you practice leadership placement instead of leadership development.
Or are you a drifter? Does your church pretty much maintain the status quo? We don’t really talk about the conviction to lead so much, and we don’t talk about development so much. And really we are comfortable with where we are. We are not really poets, we are not really plumbers. We are just kind of drifting.
Or are you both a poet and a plumber? Are you a developer who preaches the word and convicts the heart, but then gives people clear systems and processes? A pathway of clear development that they can walk on. If you do, then you are a developer and praise God for you! If you are not, then you have to face the fact that you are in one of these other categories and decide what you are going to do about it.
