Common categories of development in most organizations are command, tell, teach, train, coach, and mentor.
First you have command, which is really all about control. Then, you have telling someone what to do. Telling isn’t really development at all, it is actually dumping. Next, we have teaching and training. At least in teaching and training we care about the person, the position, and what we are asking them to do.
This way, we are doing a little bit better because what we are doing here is delegating. When we delegate, we show that we care about the person and the task that we are assigning them to. If we want to get to the next level of coaching and mentoring, that is where we finally get to developing. If you want to progress up the chart, it will take time effectiveness.
The reason why most people don’t progress to mentoring and coaching is because it takes time. It takes a lot more time to mentor and coach than to tell and command. The trade off is great, because effectiveness greatly increases.
My question to you today is, where are you on this chart? How are you leading your people? Are you dumping on them, are you delegating to them, or are you developing them? Now that you have this chart, put yourself in a category and decide what you are going to do about it.
