90 Second Leadership – The Pathway to Mastery

The Pathway to Mastery sounds really complex and mysterious, but I don’t think it is once unpacked. Most of the time when we think about how we learn and develop, we want it to display as a line straight up and to the right. However, it often feels more a line that dips, circles, and slowly progresses to the right. Without a pipeline in place, that may especially be the case.
What we want to do is something found in Mastery by George Leonard. His research revealed that the pathway to competency looks more like a spurt of growth, then a small decline or dip, a plateau, another spurt of growth, decline, plateau, and so on. To me, this repetition of growth, decline, and plateau looks a lot like a pipeline.
So the next time you are developing someone, remember the pathway to mastery does not need to be mysterious. The reality is putting people on a pathway to growth. Think steps, not programs.
Now that you know this, the next time you’re putting together a development plan, what are you doing to do about it?
